The city sponsors a free trolley service for visitors to the city. It circles the downtown area making stops a popular tourist attractions.

It's an easy way to get to Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, etc. Just be warned the free trip is not always the swiftest way to get around but it is certainly worth the price.

The Chicago Reader is a free newspaper that comes out every Thurdays highlighting what is happening for the coming weekend/week, ussually with a bend toward the alternative. You will find the Reader available free in news boxes on the street corner and at various dining and retail establishments all over the city. Dont let the pandler sell you one :)

For some folks coming to Chicago there is only one destination Wrigley Field. Home to the Chicago Cubs sports fans appreciate a ballpark that represents the history of the game.

Unique for being situated smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood, the "Friendly Confines" is one of the few old school parks in existence.

Wrigleyville, the neighborhood which surrounds Wrigley Field, is populated with plenty of nightlife. Wrigleyville is on the north side of the city and off the Addison stop of the CTA Red Line train.

And based of their status at the time of this post, the Cubs may even be playing while MAX is in town.

Early episodes of Saturday Night Live had a reoccurring skitfeaturung John Belushi, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd paying homage to the Billy Goat Tavern.

This little hole in the wall located under Michigan Avenue on in Front of the Wrigley building has been serving it's limited menu since 1934. Because of it's location Billy Goat has a colorful history as being a hangout to newspaper columnists and reporters.

Chicago Marathon

The weekend after MAX is the LaSalle Chicago Marathon. One of the most prestigious marathons in the world the Chicago race will feature over 45,000 runners from across the world.

Because of it's size and attraction, hotel rooms are always hard to come by race weekend. This might explain why you might experience higher hotel rates toward the end of MAX .

However if you are sticking around over the weekend the Chicago Marathon is quite a spectacular event to see. Over one million spectators line the 26.2 miles to cheer on the runners.

About McCormick Place

McCormick Place is a HUGE facilities, we are talking 2.7 square feet of exhibit halls.

McCormick Place is located just south of Soldiers Field, right on the lake front sort of set off on it's own, a bit isolated. This is why most conferences held there, including MAX, takes advantage of shuttle buses.

The three conference hotels are closer to what most would traditionally consider Chicago. They are the more convenient to enjoying the cities sight, shopping, dining, entertainment, etc.

So while staying at a hotel other than the McCormick Hyatt may initially seem inconvenient, it is not so convenient for enjoying all that Chicago has to offer. You can figure that most attendees will be relying on the shuttle buses, as well as the fact that you will only require to make the trip once in the AM and back in the evening.

The cost to stay at the McCormick hotel is significantly more expensive than the others, so if you don't want to deal with the
shuttle, you might choose to stay at the cheaper hotel and spend some extra dollars on taking a cab instead.

Museums Campus

All within walking distance and just north of the convention center where MAX is being held is the Museum Campus home of three of Chicago's fantastic museums; The Field Museum, The Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium.

At the Field Museum of natural history you will find everything from Sue, the worlds largest and best preserved T-Rex to Egyptian mummies and artifacts and much, much more.

The Adler Planetarium was the first planetarium in the western hemisphere. It offers over 35000 square feet of exhibits as well as amazing shows about the Solar System.

The Shedd Aquarium is one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world. Two of the Shedd's top attractions are the half million gallon Wild Coral Reef the and the Oceanarium where you will find Beluga whales and dolphins in an inifinty style pool looking over the lake.

Buckingham Fountain

If you watched an episode of Married With Children, you have been exposed to Chicago's Buckingham Fountain.

One of Chicago's most popular attractions and one of the largest fountains in the world, was featured in the opening credits along with Frank Sinatra's "Love and Marriage".

Located in Grant Park at Columbus Drive (301 East) and Congress Parkway (500 South) the 1.5 million gallon fountain produces a major water display and the center jet shoots 150 feet into the air. The fountain, that date back to 1927, runs from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm each day.

Avoid Street Hassles

Like any other major metropolitan area the streets has its share of homeless, beggers, hustlers, and just plain crazy people. If you are not from urban area encountering these sorts of individuals might be unnerving.

Here are a a few tips to deal with these situations.

1. Don't wear your conference badge on the street. At the conference your badge identifies you as a fellow professional. On the street your badge identifies you as a tourist and target and generally someone to hassle.

2. Don't make eye contact. It feels a little unnatural at first, but making eye contact will be perceived A n invitation to approach you.

3. Keep walking, no matter how many time someone calls out "Hey buddy" or "Yo big guy", if you appear not to respond and keep walking, eventually you will be left alone. There perceived persistence will wane pretty quickly.

4. No matter how pathetic the story they recant to you, it is most likely just that, a story. If you hang around long enough chances are you will hear the same one again, so don't take the bait. Better yet don't allow yourself to get cornered into listening to the story in the first place,

5. If you feel obligated to reply/ respond, a polite and respectful "Sorry I cant help you today" is enough, then see tips 2 & 3.

Streetwise
There is a program called Streetwise to help severely impoverished men and women out of poverty. By selling the "Streetwise" newspaper for $1 a copy, each vendor is given an opportunity to learn important business skills, improve his or her confidence, and ultimately earn enough income to become self-sufficient. StreetWise provides people with an opportunity to get started and to help themselves with dignity.

If you want to help someone out, I recommend you support a Streetwise vendor by purchasing a paper from them, look that they are wearing Streetwise identification around their neck.

Millennium Park

Like the rest of the world Chicago went through the anticipation of the uneventful Y2K. And to commemorate this occasion Chicago ventured to develop a park which of course wasn't complete until 2004.

This controversial project which was 4 years behind schedule and millions over budget,is now one of the most visited locations of the city, and popular public Gathering space.

Millennium Park is a 24 acres park located s bounded by Michigan Avenue East Randolph Street, Columbus Drive and East Monroe Drive.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion
Frank Gehry designed outdoor concert venue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.

The Crown Fountain
Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa the fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens on LED screens and having

Lurie Garden
This 2.5-acre garden pays homage to the City's motto, "Urbs in Horto" (City in a Garden), which refers to Chicago's transformation from its flat and marshy origins to a bold and powerful city. Highlights of the garden include the dramatically lit, 15-foot-high "shoulder" hedge.

Cloud Gate
Cloud Gate by British artist Anish Kapoor'sis a 110-ton elliptical sculpture is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, which reflect the city's famous skyline and the clouds above. A 12-foot-high arch provides a "gate" to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives.

Garretts has been popping up their famous cheese and caramel popcorn since 1949, and is a favorite stp for people traveling downtown. You can choose between freshly made caramel and cheese popcorn or go for the "Mini Mix" where cheese and caramel corn are combined in one bag.

Oprah has included it on her listed of "favorite things", and if it is goo enough for Oprah...

Lets talk Pizza; not the bastardized versions sold distributed by the national chains, not the "pizzas" that come topped with things like artichoke hearts and pineapple; let talk Chicago Deep Dish pizza.

Chicago Deep Dish is not your average snack food, it's an honest to goodness knife and fork meal.

Pizzeria Uno takes credit for inventing it in the forties, Deep Dish pizza consists of a deep sturdy crust which houses mounds of cheese and toppings (Italian sausage being a popular one) and topped with tomato sauce. Besides Uno, there are several other pizzeria's serving their own version of Deep Dish pizza, Due, Ginos East, Lou Malnatis and sost recenly Giordanos.

Chicago Style: Italian Beef

To my surprise, most people I have talked to who have not grown up in Chicagoland are not familiar with the Italian Beef sandwich.

The Italian Beef sandwich consists of thinly sliced roast beef that is soaked in a a beef broth along with Italian spices. Italian beef is served on crusty bread, usually Gonnella Italian Bread.

Getting your sandwich "Dipped" refers to having it submerged, bread and all, in to the au jus sauce. This is definitely the way to go although it will make your dining a tad messier.

You will also be asked if you would like hot ( giardiniera) or sweet (roasted green) pepper.

If you are feeling extremely gluttonous, go for the Combo Beef which which is your traditional Italian Beef plus Italian sausage in one sandwich.

You'll find Italian beef at most hot-dog stands. Jay Leno swears by Mr Beef at 666 N Orleans St. Other favorites include Al's #1 Beef 169 W Ontario and Portillos 100 W. Ontario.

Jake & Elwood knew Chicago is "Sweet Home" to the Blues. Legends like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon help define the Chicago Blues sound, a sound which influenced the likes of the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and other.

There are still plenty of Clubs which you can catch live Blues nighly. Probably the closest to MAX is Buddy Guy's Legends at 754 S Wabash Ave. Also nearby is Blue Chicago at 536 N. Clark.

If you dont mind traveling a little you can check out some of the more famous Blues joints like the Checker Board Lounge 5201 S Harper Ct. and Kingston Mines 2548 N Halsted.

Public Art

You can get cultured and see the city at the same time. Chicago is populated with some impressive public art. Assemble here is but a smattering ofsome of the famous and extrodiniary art an sculptures you can find around town.

The "Picasso". Is it a monkey? Is it a woman? This unnamed landmark was never explained by Pablo Picasso when he donated it to the city forty years ago. Make your own opinion when you check out this towering 50 foot, 162 ton sculpture. You will find it at Daley Plaza 55 W Randolph

Across the Street from the Picasso you will find Miro's "Chicago". A tall thin concrete statue depicting a woman with out stretched arms.

Nearby at the State of Illinois Building (The Thompson Center) 100 W Randolph you will find "Monument with Standing Beast" by Jean Dubeffet. This black and white fiberglass sculpture created that evokes mixed opinions.

Anish Kapoor's "Cloud Gate" affectionately known to as "The Bean" sits in Millennium Park on Michigan Avenue and Randolph. The 110 ton seamless stainless steel elliptical sculpture which is a recent addition to the city, but definitely a favorite. Because it's shiny "shell" reflects the skyline it makes for a great photo-op

Also in Millennium is Crown Fountain. Tech nerds will love this high-tech fountain which features two 50x12 Foot LED screens

Marc Chagall's "Four Seasons" is a four thousand square foot mosaic depicting the four seasons. You will find it at Dearborn & Monroe Streets
The newest public art installation is Agora at 1149 S Michigan. Created by polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz, it consists of 44 headless cast iron torso.

Enjoy The View

Chicago is an Architectural mecca. Birthplace of the Skyscraper, home of some of the tallest buildings in the world. To enjoy the majesty, there are a few locations you can go to take it all in.

For a spectacular and free view of skyline head out either to Navy Pier or the Adler Planetarium. Both are peninsulas that jut out into the lake an give you a great vantage point of the Chicago skyline.

For another perspective, look down upon the Windy City from the Sears Tower 1,353 up in the air. Or if you have a fear of heights you can settle for John Hancock building observatorv which is a mere 1000 feet up.

The 110 Story Sears Tower is located at 233 South Wacker Dr. The famous criss-crosses of the John Hancock build resides at 875 N. Michigan Avenue.

Tip: For a special treat, on a clear night visit the Signature Room of the John Hancock building where you can gave a drink and enjoy the view from the 95th floor,

What makes a Hot Dog Chicago Style? Created in 1898, the Chicago Dog is a steamed/boiled Vienna Beef hot dog with a natural casing that gives a "snap" to the bite. Chicago Dogs are served on a steamed poppy seed bun.

In this town a dog with "everything" topped with yellow mustard, onion, sweet relish, tomato wedges, pickle slice, celery salt and sport peppers. NO KETCHUP!

Some places will refuse to add ketchup to your dog, even upon request. Those that will, most definitely look at you funny. But you are in Chicago, save the ketchup for the fries and go for the true Chicago Dog.

Arriving from Midway

Midway Airport is a great way to arrive into the city. It is much smaller than O'Hare, closer to downtown, and is serviced by the budget airlines.

This post is to help get you cheaply and swiftly from Midway Airport to your hotel. Chicago's public transportation system, the CTA , is your best bet to get you into the city and avaoiding traffic pile ups and expensive fees. The train ride from the airport is approximate 30 minutes.

Just follow these steps:

Go to baggage pickup you will see signs that say "Train to City".

The walk will take you along the parking area which might seem strange but don't fret, just follow the signs.

Follow the signs until you reach the Midway CTA train station.

At the station you can purchase a fare card from the vending machine out side the station. A single trip will cost $1.75, however you might want to put more money on your fare card that you can reuse while you are in town.

Board the train. This is the Orange Line. Its the end of the line so you can't take in in the wrong direction at this station.

To get to the Palmer House:

Exit at the Adams/Wabash Station.

Walk North on Wabash.

The First corner is Monroe.

Turn Left at Monroe

Cross the street going West on Monroe

The hotel will be on theft on that block

To get to the Hyatt Regency:

Exit at the Randolph/ Wabash Station

Walk North on Wabash 1/2 block to Lake

At Lake turn Right onto Lake

Walk East Lake Street two blocks to Michigan Ave.

Cross Cross the at Michigan.

Turn left and walk North on Michigan

Walk one block to S. Water

Turn right S. Water

Walk one half block to the hotel

To get to the Chicago Hilton:

Exit at the State & Van Buren Station (Library Stop)..

Leaving the station you will be on Dearborn Street

Walk East (left) on Van Buren

Walk two blocks to Michigan Ave

Turn Right and walk South three blocks to Balboa

Cross Balboa and you will be at the hotel

Arriving from OHare

Board the train. This is the Blue Line. so you can't take in in the wrong direction at this station.

To get to the Palmer House:

Exit at the Monroe Street Station.

Walk East on Monroe.

Cross State Street.

The Palmer House is on the next Block

To get to the Hyatt Regency:

Exit at the Lake Street Station.

Walk East Lake Street tow blocks to Michigan Ave.

Cross Cross the at Michigan.

Turn left and walk North on Michigan

Walk one block to S. Water

Turn right S. Water

Walk one half block to the hotel

Exit at the Jackson Street Station.

Leaving the station you will be on Dearborn Street

facing the street turn Left and walk South

The corner will be Van Buren & Dearborn

Walk East (left) on Van Buren

Walk two blocks to Michigan Ave

Turn Right and walk South three blocks to Balboa

Cross Balboa and you will be at the hotel

The Lakefront

Lake Michigan is the the largest freshwater lake in the US and fifth largest lake in the world. Over 18 miles of Lake Michigan borders the east side of the city most of which is public space.

The Chicago lakefront is the home of one of the most spectacular skylines in the world. It is also a great source of recreation for runners, bicyclists, rollerbladers, as well as boaters and swimmers. and of course admission is FREE

Grid Unlocked

The forefathers of Chicago had the sense to layout the city in a logical grid which makes it relatively easy to find your way around the city once you understand it.

First of all the lake is always east.

The Corner of State & Madison Street is the 0, 0 point of the grid. Going north from there the address increases by 100 North each block. For instance State & Grand Avenue is 600 North (6 blocks north of Madison). Similarly each block south of Madison increases by 100 South, ie Harrison and State is 600 South (6 blocks south of Madison).

The East/West addresses work the same way., increasing as you walk in the respective direction. So if you are at 400 West and as you walk the adresses are decreasing, you are going east. If you are are at 100 East and the the adresses are increasing you are going east and eventully you will end up in the lake.

Public Transit

Chicago's public transportation, the CTA, is not only a easy and affordable way to get around the city it is also a great way it's also a great way to get a feel for varied people and cultures that make Chicago so great.

Full fare on public transit is $2.00 a ride, however you can save money by purchasing Transit card which reduces full fare travel to $1.75 and allows two transfers within two hours. The first transfer is 25 cents and the second transfer is free.

Transit cards are accepted on all buses and trains.. Buses do not give change and trains require you purchase Transit cards from the card vending machines located at all train stations. Once purchased, cards can be reloaded with more money.

The CTA also offer 1, 2, 3 ,5 and 7 day passes which allow un limited travel for a period of time.

You can purchase Transit cards at train stations, airports, major grocery stores.

Flying Into Town

Chicago is fortunate to have two airports, O'Hare and Midway, that make coming and going from Chicago very convenient.

Most people are familiar with O'Hare International as it is one of the busiest airports in the world and a frequent stop over point for cross country travelers. Most major airlines and those arriving internationally will come through O'Hare.

Midway is a smaller airport and services mostly the discount airlines like Southwest and ATA. But unlike most cities with a secondary airport, Midway is certainly solid option to fly into.

Both airports feature a CTA train line which will get you into Chicago quickly and easy for under $2.00

I plan to go into more details on each aiport in future posts.

Prior to every MAX conference I have attended there have been numerous questions about the host city. So we have created this blog as a way to pass on all sorts of information about Chicago for folks coming to our city for the 2007 Adobe MAX conference.
