Hoods: Chinatown

Chinatown is located just a few blocks west of McCormick Place, home of MAX 2007. So a short walk or cab ride will set you in the center of Chinese culture.

Chinatown is a great place to grab Lunch, Dinner or a weekend morning Dim Sum.

Chinatown has an older section along Wentworth Avenue feature lots of interesting stores, markets, bakeries and popular restaurants like Three Happiness, Phoenix, Penaang and Won Kow.

Just a block North at Archer Ave you will find Chinatown Square, which has some newer restaurants including the very popular Lao Sze Chuan and Joy Yee's Noodle shop.

I will be spending a day or two in Chicago and will also be checking out Chinatown. If I can only try one restaurant, which one would you, or others recommend?

People really seem to like Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown Square. It certainly doesn't have the atmosphere as some of the other restaurant, but people love the food there. It is a bit smaller and can be crowded.

For a more traditional setting you might try Three Happiness or Won Kow which I have always enjoyed.

There are lots of options and most restaurants have menus in the windows so you should find something to suit your taste.

Thanks so much for the resources here. As for c-town, would you have any recommendation against staying there? For instance, would walking around with a backpack be a walking mug me sign? Do you think it would be tough to catch a cab from there (I know you mentioned it was a way to get to the conference from there, but do you have any sense of how hard it would be?) I've lived in the city before (not Chicago, but NY, DC, and others), so it's not that I'm overly concerned. Just wondering what it may be like to stay there, even if otherwise ok with city living. Thanks.

I am not aware of any hotels in Chinatown. The area is a little rough between Chinaown and McCormick Place (projects for instance), but the area is currently undergoing a change. So if you have lived in an urban area, you should OK as far as safety as long as you are smart and alert.

It is not the nicest place to stay to enjoy the city, but it is certainly relatively close to the conference.

Is there a specific place you mare looking to stay?

Thanks, yes. The "Chinatown Hotel Sro". Not the best reviews, but some not so bad. It's just me, alone, and I really would only be sleeping there, so I figured, eh. :-)
